Boulder Lake Road, McCall ID

Jughandle Mountain, as viewed from the terminus of our hike

May 4, 2018 -- Today's hike covered more than 5 miles along Boulder Lake Road, which followed Boulder Creek, which drains the Boulder Meadows Reservoir. There were few signs to guide the way, and the road was snow-covered along some segments, leading us to eventually lose the road in search of a photo for Jughandle Mountain, shown in the opening photo of this post. We know it was Jughandle mountain, because I shot a bearing on it and found it to be 153 degrees from Magnetic North. The map to the right shows the location of the mountain relative to the extend of the hike, which fell short of the reservoir. The initial plan was to begin the hike from the reservoir, but snow over the roadway changed our plans.

Our means of transportation and the point where the hike began

Logs across the tumbling, rushing Boulder Creek

Near where the logs were photographed was this make-shift potty, which appeared to have been attached to a post that was nailed to a plywood floor, long since gone.

Farther up the road, a fallen pine blocked any possible auto traffic that could handle the snow.

Today's stats:

Distance: > 5 miles (Map My Hike)
Load: Backpack weighing approximately 20 pounds
Elevation gain: Probably 800 feet. Map My Hike showed 5417 / 5335 feet for the car's elevation, and a maximum elevation of 6,250 feet at the return point. I rounded down to 800 feet.

Stats for the year:

Distance to date: 70.7 miles
Elevation gain to date: 16,410
